SEIASAS

The Sociedades Estatales de Infraestructuras Agrarias (Government Agrarian Infrastructure Corporations) are the most important instrument used by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in carrying the modernisation and consolidation of irrigation farming methods declared to be of General Interest that are included in the current National Irrigation Plan. Due to their scope, these Corporations are divided up into the SEIASAs of the north, that operate in the Regional Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Galicia, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Castilla y León; the SEIASAs of the north-east, whose activities are carried out in the Regional Autonomous Communities of La Rioja, Catalonia, Aragón, Navarre and the Balearic Islands, the SEIASA of the southern Meseta that encompasses the Regional Autonomous Communities of Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid and the Community of Valencia, and the SEIASA of the south and east, which operates in Andalusia, Murcia and the Canary Islands.

By applying technical and financial assistance for executing work aimed at transforming traditional irrigation systems into automatic irrigation systems, these Corporations pursue the objective of achieving savings in water consumption and an improved use of water resources, in addition to a reduction in agricultural tasks and an improvement in production rates. To carry out these actions of modernisation and consolidation, the SEIASAS operated through agreements with Irrigation Associations and depending on each case, with the regional Governments of their respective geographical territories. In this regard, it should be said that since July 2004, with the arrival of the new management teams, the SEIASASs have made a considerable effort in terms of providing information and becoming integrated as part of the work teams of the Irrigation Associations and this has led to an increase in the integration of these Associations into the irrigation farming modernisation programme.
